Abstract

Volleyball performance depends on psychological processes that operate within individual athletes, between teammates, and across the competitive environment. This narrative review examines anxiety, confidence, perceptual expertise, motivation, collective functioning, psychological skills training, and recovery. Selected research available by September 2023 indicates that these dimensions influence how athletes interpret pressure, select actions, sustain practice, and respond to errors. However, improvements in questionnaire scores or isolated skills cannot automatically be interpreted as improvements in competitive performance. Small samples, contextual differences, and limited experimental control constrain several findings. Effective preparation should therefore integrate individual psychological routines with representative practice, supportive coaching, and appropriate mental health provision. The central implication is that psychological preparation requires continuous evaluation within volleyball’s technical and interpersonal demands.
